Offroad and on the Trails

The Fox

Yesterday, Joe and I were out for a lunchtime walk, picking up a few geocaches along the way. We were on the trails at the northern end of the Guadalupe River in San Jose, starting in Alviso. South of Hwy 237, I spotted this little fellow on the other side of a creek. I was thrilled because I’d only caught flashing glimpses of foxes in the wild before, and they have been one of my favorite animals since I was a kid.

The Fox

He(?) was aware of us but generally unconcerned. He even stopped to gnaw at a foxtail (not his own!) or something in his fur at one point before moving along.

There are a lot of bird, mice, and even jackrabbits in this area, so I suspect it’s a fine hunting ground for him. I wish him a long and happy life!

This was an extraordinary experience. We both saw the fox at the same time. It was casually strolling along a trail about 20′ below us and 100 feet away. I tried to get a pic with my camera phone but luckily Nazzie had his spiffy 10 billion megapixel camera. He was in no hurry and was not at all concerned we were there. Of course,w e were of no immediate threat. We watched him for 5 minutes before we continued back to the car.
