Offroad and on the Trails

The Mountains & the Coast

We made two similar day trips in August. Both started in San Jose, then up Highway 9 through Saratoga, up to Skyline where we enjoyed the nice drive north. We then opted for one of the several great backroads down to the coast.

The coast naturally attracts a lot of people during the hot summer months, and we’re certainly not immune to its charms. Fortunately, mountains and ocean are both nearby. Unlike most people though, we prefer to take advantage of the fantastic backroads rather than crawling over the mountain highways in a broiling sea of stop-and-go traffic.

Besides just enjoying the drives, there are many local coast and mountain destinations that we look forward to revisiting, or discovering for the first time. On these two drives, Pescadero, Alice’s Restaurant, Pebble Beach, and Half Moon Bay were on our list of places to stop.

We enjoy quirky, whimsical art which is common to both the mountains and coasts. We also enjoy the eclectic and sometimes downright strange sights in general that appear so frequently in these places. Exploring the backroads here is almost always rewarding.

Because I ended up with a large combined gallery with captions on most of the photos, I’ll avoid repeating all of those details here. Suffice to say that we really enjoyed both day trips very much indeed.

Finally got around to checking out the gallery – WOW!!! Fantastic!! I was making some notes here to comment on the photos, but there is just too much to say. So many fantastic things – you made me want to play with a camera at that garden centre or whatever it is, eat artichoke bread, play in the pebbly beach, go for a drive, etc etc. And some fantastic photos of your daughter too. 🙂

    Thanks so much!

The funky garden center place with all the glass bits was pretty much photography heaven. With your new camera, I imagine that Scott would have to drag you out of that place. 🙂
