Offroad and on the Trails

Another Quick Update

Wizard Island, Crater Lake

September, 2006

I have a few posts I’m putting together (nothing particularly spellbinding!) but I’ve been wrestling with a cold for several days now, and it completely wiped out my weekend…. So unfair!

As a filler post, I thought I would link to the large photo gallery from our September, 2006 trip to northeastern California and into Oregon. This was a family trip, with a little geocaching thrown in here and there for my sake, and to lead us to a few interesting locations.

We used the car for the trip instead of the Jeep, since I had no offroading planned. We could have used the Jeep once or twice on short dirt roads but overall the M3 was a joy. The biggest downside for me was the lack of lumbar support in the M3’s sport seats after several consecutive days with a lot of driving. The other downside was that I didn’t feel I could add the pics to my regular Jeep galleries, so this has become something of the “lost photo album” on my site.

As a consequence, there are no captions like I would normally have added to the pictures. Also the tone of the photos are slightly different, reflecting the family nature of the trip. We sure did visit some breathtakingly beautiful places too. How could anyone not love Crater Lake?

The purpose of the trip was to get some family vacation time, and to explore NE California, the largest part of the state that I’d still never seen in person. It was outside the regular tourist season, and a little before the prime Fall colors in the trees, but before there was risk of snow causing us problems on some of the trip. It was a wonderful scouting expedition.

I hope you enjoy the pictures 1/10th as much as I enjoyed revisiting them.

Lots of great photos, however that photo of Wizard Island (4853) is stunning! Just stunning! something about img_4709 really appealed to me as well, and img_4771 and 4881’s like a neat little castle on an island, 4905 the colours look like they could be Tahiti 🙂 (although the vegetation definitely isn’t!). Looks like you some some great scenery and stayed at some fantastic places.

Pretty much everything about Crater Lake is amazing and beautiful. It’s right up there with Yosemite for staggering, jaw-dropping grandeur. That water is stunning, and at times it really reminded me of places like Tahiti or Bermuda. 4905 reminded me of one of the Mediterranean islands, maybe it was the white boat.

4881 looked like a perfect, miniature castle to me as well, but it’s known as the Phantom Ship, which I could see as well. It probably looks very cool with fog and mist swirling around it…

The rock formation in 4709 really caught my eye when I took it. I thought it looked like a row of teeth from some enormous, primordial dragon. 🙂

Truly a place of mythical beauty.
