Step One: Run your pocket queries. I run three on the same day, once per week, to cover the geographical area I'm interested in. More on that later.
These PQs give me the current, active geocaches in my area that I haven't yet found. You can see what I typically opt for and against in my PQs: I want active caches I haven't found and that aren't on my short ignore list. I don't filter by terrain, container size, difficulty, or by attributes.
I omit events and puzzles because there's usually nothing there. I load only solved puzzles and events I'm going to, I add both of those types manually. I can't normally do Wherigo caches, and there are no unfound Project APE caches or GPS Adventure Exhibits within a zillion miles of me.
When the three PQs arrive there is some overlap between them, and the data needs to be "'massaged" into the format I prefer, so all three PQs get thrown together into GSAK next.
