A mere quarter mile from our destination, we fail. We can go no futher without bushwhacking or making a long route around the intervening terrain and vegetation. It might have been an option, but we were both tired, hot, and down to the last few ounces of the water we had brought for this part of the hike. The exertion and heat had fully caught up with us, and after examining our options and alternatives, we decide to turn back and fight another day.
