Night has officially fallen as we head up into the hills for a new section, having finally passed the first checkpoint after over three hours! As we head into the hills, I switch into four wheel drive (high range) for the first time.

Here the extra driving lights on the roof rack came into their own and were worth their weight in gold. Another team described us as "lighting up the planet."
