Now we've reached the most obscure goal of this trip: Cannibal Island Road. I saw this road on the maps while researching our Lost Coast trip, and I thought, "How can we *not* visit a Cannibal Island Road?" Especially when it was a quick detour from our planned route.

It turned out to be a very straight east-west road through farmlands, ending at the coast at a place called Crab Park. We drove out - having to pause for a cattle drive across the road - and reached foggy Crab Park, which was most notable for a vast amount of driftwood, some of it quite large.

I looked up Cannibal Island in my California Place Names book when we returned home, and found this marvelous explanation: "Named for quarrelsome settlers who were said to fight like a "bunch of cannibals"."
